We spoke to all staff who work with toddlers and retrained them on how the use of time-out is prohibited with that age group. We also purchased materials to create a Calm Down Corner in those classrooms. Additionally, we have added space in our orientation and training to emphasize the use of time-out, when it is appropriate, and for how long.

On school-aged field trips, we typically have no more than 7 students per teacher in a group. We will discuss with teachers any students who may need additional guidance and supervision during field trips. Those students will be placed in either a group with less than 5 children or in a group with two teachers. If concerns continue, that child will need a parent or guardian chaperone to come on the field trip. Name-to-face counts will be conducted when exiting the vehicle and entering the vehicle as well as frequently throughout the duration of the field trip.

Supervision is the function of observing, overseeing, and guiding a child or group of children, including an awareness of, and responsibility for, the ongoing activity of each child, and being near enough to intervene when needed. The program is required to maintain supervision at all times.

We will add a specific section to our orientation to go over the dangers of not always having all in view. Rooms were re-evaluated to make sure there are no blind spots in the room that make it harder for staff to properly supervise. When a staff member exhibits irresponsible supervision, he or she will receive additional training and/or replacement.

Staff who exhibit unsafe or irresponsible behavior will receive additional training with a more experienced staff member and/or will be replaced. This topic will also be addressed at our next staff meeting as a refresher for all staff.
