The Education Manager completed a written reprimand on 5/8/23. Explained C.A.R.D Head Start Policies for Redirection. If C.A.R.D Head Start policies for appropriate redirection are not followed employee will be recommended for termination. Staff will attend Conscious Discipline and the Pyramid training over the summer. Mentors will continue to provide guidance in the classroom as well.

Plan to Correct

Education Specialist conducted a written warning on 5/17/23 for Smoking on CARD Head Start premises and not following Tobacco-free workplace policy #30. Violation of this policy will be cause for disciplinary action which may include termination.

Plan to Correct

Our program does not typically dismiss or expel children with challenging behavior; our goal is to work with both the child and family to increase self-regulation skills in the classroom and at home. The child that slapped the other child was placed on a behavioral support plan by our Mental Health and Disabilities on 2/9/23. Clinicians from Grand Lake Mental Health Center, the teachers, and the family met to work on a treatment plan for this child on 2/11/23. Our teaching staff works hard to provide support in development monitoring through talk, play, and activities to engage in learning and practice self-regulation skills. Our teachers receive training in Conscious Discipline and work to help children manage strong emotions. After receiving the complaint, the education team and classroom mentors met with both the lead teacher and the assistant to go over active supervision. The mentor coach also modeled how to shadow the aggressor to help provide a safer classroom environment. The teaching staff is also currently enrolled in the Pyramid Model training. The Pyramid Model is used to help support social-emotional competence and helps early childhood educators build skills for supporting nurturing and responsive caregiving, create learning environments, provided targeted social-emotional skills, and support children with challenging behaviors. Summer training will emphasize Conscious Discipline strategies, as well as active supervision-"one up, one down" strategies.

Regulation Description

340:110-3-287(a) - Supervision. Supervision is the function of observing, overseeing, and guiding a child or group of children, including an awareness of, and responsibility for, the ongoing activity of each child, and being near enough to intervene when needed. The program is required to maintain supervision at all times.

Plan to Correct

A pion is in place for teachers to check all children in pull-ups or diapers hourly and within 15 minutes of expected dismissal. This will be documented and a copy given to parents of children who are not yet toilet learned. Summer training will prioritize ensuring teaching staff understands this system.
